The rowing machine will give as much as you put into it.  It can be a great complete body workout and is an extremely fast way to burn calories/fat depending on the heart rate you work out at.  You will find that the rowing machine will work mostly your legs and lats, while your core and arms will also be worked. 

If you are a beginner, here are a few things I recommend.

watch that video, she gives a great demonstration of proper technique which is extremely important to a good workout

2. After some light strokes, working on your technique, try going for about 10 minutes at a moderate effort level (around 140-165 heart rate)  This will let your body adjust to the muscles you will be using.

3. Try to row, without stopping, for 20 minutes straight 3 days a week at a heart rate in the 140-165 range.  Make sure to keep good technique when you are tired, and try to go longer if you can.
